I am not sure I understand fully what you are trying to do. You can sometimes do some crafty things with Find & Replaces in Word to save a lot of re-typing/re-formatting, but I don't think that is what you want.
When you refer to the "contents list" is this a Word table of contents? If so, then that would be automatically updated when the content it links to is updated.
Please can you explain more using a specific example as I am not clear on what you have explained so far - but it may just be me!
OK, I think I understand now. You cannot do this in Word as a standard function but could write a VB Script to do it I think. Alternatively, something like this might do what you want?

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse - VB stands for Visual Basic. Visual Basic for Applications (VBA not VB Script) is a cut down version of the Visual Basic programming language. You can use VBA to do extra things within all of the MS Office applications. However, for what you want to do it would take longer to write something and test it than to just do the job manually.
