I've been developing bespokely designed barcode tracking systems for about twenty years and have worked with a number of barcode equipment manufacturers and suppliers over that time.
What you have described is an asset management system. There are loads of them to choose from, but from what you have described so far it doesn't sound like Wasp is going to be the right solution for you.
Wasp is okay for what it is - a very basic asset management system, backed up with some slick marketing to make a mediocre product into a commercial success. The hardware they supply is the cheapest available and whilst it is adequate for stock room control, it isn't really the thing for a more industrial environment.
If you're asset tagging tools and the alike, you're going to need some pretty robust tags. Paper-based barcode labels printed on a cheap printer won't last a week and the cheap barcode scanners will only be able to scan them for half that time.
To me, it sounds like you need a more industrial solution than Wasp supplies. It will cost more, but it will work reliably for years to come.
As well as barcoding, I would suggest you also look at RF ID tagging as well. RF ID works well on tools and plant equipment: the tags are more robust and it is much faster to collect the tracking information.
In the first instance, I suggest you need to talk to an automation expert. If you PM me I can give you some contact names and numbers.
