Default .net domain renewal £50 for 2 years

Is this normal? A friend has just received a bill from a registrar (ryhmes with fames) that is charging him £46 to renew his .net domain for two years. Is this normal?

Thanks

Nope far from it. If it is a genuine letter from the company that registered his domain and not a scam then a renewal should only be about £8 per year...

If its genuine transfer the domain to another registrar sharpish...

Yes Phil, the letter is genuine. Unfortunately, we may have to bite the bullet and pay as I have set up a whole host of DNS entries for him and he can't afford the disruption. Just a subtle warning to you all - avoid such a registrar like a plague.

Hang on. Are we talking just the renewal of the domain here or do Names (I guess? ) providing the hosting as well?

In addition, when you do a domain transfer to another registrar, the name servers are not changed until you change them manually so the site would not become unavailable just by moving the management of the domain.

I wish. No hosting. Just registration. This is not the first time. he was hosting with a previous company that they acquired and raised prices after that to pay for the acquisition. This is his last domain with them as I moved all the others. Just had a conversation with their customer care and she claimed unbelieveably that the reason why names charges three times more than all the others is because they are based in the UK and had better technical staff.

Just for the fun of it they also charge £10 for domain transfer.

What utter b******s. I've never heard such a load of rubbish in my life.

My advice? Take the hit and get it moved. If you do it right you shouldn't get any down time.
