Open source approaches differ from the proprietary model of software licensing by allowing other individuals and organizations to view, modify and redistribute the source code.
It is not completely Google's own open source browser, its underlying rendering engine is based on the open source WebKit HTML/CSS rendering engine, the same/similar one used by Apple's Safari browser.
This is a good thing, since at least they haven't created something completely from scratch, they are using something that is tried and tested.

That's correct Paul, it will be interesting to see how the new project affects the relationship between Mozilla and Google... wonders if one day we might see Firefox Chrome
The new Google Chrome Beta browser is available for download now (from the Google Search page) and it is VERY fast - much faster than IE and a bit faster than Firefox - at least on my machine.
