As a VPS is 'hosted' i.e. it's on someone elses network, what makes you think you will nothave some problems going this route?
If you want total contril, put your own box in a datacentre or, as Phil say, go dedicated. If you are not very competent in all matters server/networks, you will see your issues magnify!
im currently with fast hosts which arnt the best they seem to always have problems with the hosting and when you need to get in touch with them theres never anyone there to help. Im currently setting up with ukfast which have glowing reviews, but at the price im not supprised at near on £400 a month. However personelly for me if the website stays live every day and dosent have any problems then it will pay for its self. this year alone the websites been down numerous times and at one point they even deleted the website of the server, good job it was all backed up. Just depends on your budget theres a few good companys out there

Dedicated or VPS, you are still reliant on a reliable data centre connection and hardware control...
