Default Online Shops - What different types of marketing have you tried?

Just thought it would be interesting to find out what people have tried and what methods have been effective in generating new business for online shops.

We used to use ebay, in days goneby. We don't have an online shop at moment, although one is planned!

I have found press releases to be especially effective as I haven't wanted to shell out loadsamoney (indeed any money!) on Adwords or PPC campaigns.

Knowing a lot of people generally, getting out and about to networking meetings and using students as clothes horses (walking adverts) at various universities has also helped my particular business.

As I posted yesterday, free ads on selected gumtree sites have brought a fair amount of traffic and susprisingly strong conversion rates. I also use social networking sites and blogging but honestly find it hard to keep up with all these and still run the nuts and bolts of the business!

Now that the brand is more established and people 'get' what it is about, we get a lot of word of mouth business and the website traffic is now consistently abouve 500 uniques a day.

I think forums like this one and RL networking on an everyday basis (not just in the business arena but in all the other 'communities of interest' we belong to) are great ways of letting potential customers know informally about our services/products without being pushy.

As well as press releases participating in forums and commenting on blogs helps get your name out there. And writing a blog on your site can help generate traffic and attract those all important back links that help drive up your rankings in the search engines.

Thanks Ray, I would love to do a blog, but the thought of setting it up terrifies me
