I would also make sure that your story is newsworthy, even if it's only aimed at a nice market. We try to do research into our market and send out press releases with interesting stats.
I'd like to add that the company should never use WE, I or US anywhere in the release unless it's a quote or something.
Thanks for the list - that's quite helpful.
This is great advice
I love writing them too.
An eye catching headline is all important as you have just 2 seconds to attract the attention of busy readers.
I recently wrote a press release for a restaurant that is having a themed evening in support of a local charity.
The headline is
'Bollywood Fever Hits Dunstable'
The story is about the Bollywood dance & music craze sweeping the nation. Wrapped up neatly in that story are details of the fundraising event, the who, what, why, where and when etc.
If you want to write your own press releases there might be a few samples online in your genre that you can use as an idea of how they are laid out.
Good luck

Really nice list, thanks for that![]()
This is mentioned in the first post, but not to enough detail: The who, what, where, when are incredibly important, and must be in your first paragraph, but much more than that is the why. The why is what makes your press release news-worthy. Read through your press release and ask yourself why (without being facetious) and it will get a lot better with little work.
Thanks Vicky
My wife is always trying to write a press release, but with no joy. With the help from your top 10 tips, it might make this happen.
I’ve been asked to bookmark this page, so that must be a good sign.
