I've been sacked from numerous jobs for standing up for myself when someone has tried to bully me. Somehow I always ended up coming off the worst when managers realised I wouldn't take their sh*t and that I was stronger than they were and that's one of the reasons I started up on my own. As Emily says, well done Nicks for using your experiences in a positive way and helping others who are in your position!
This is a highly relevant issue. Due to the general low quality of managers generally, they try to manage by being officious, noisy, belittling their staff and not understanding how to get the best out of people.
I think a big part of this is education. We put people into management positions and dont train them at all. Oddly enough, they fail! A lot of the time!
I work in a number of companies, and in varying degrees, this is a real problem.
I agree. I see this a lot in the consultancy work I do. In some companies, untrained managers attempt to control their staff through domination rather than motivation; In others, there's simply no management at all, and the bored, unmotivated staff turn on each other.
And it doesnt only work that way, bullying and domination can be from the staff to the management too. I've seen that happen with other people; staff throw said dolly from pram and manager says nothing and gives them what they want because they daren't say anything for whatver reason holds them back. Some management also want an easy life and let some employees get away some things you wouldnt elsewhere, other staff see this and start to copy or get annoyed, and before you know it, complete disarray. I have some stories that I couldnt repeat here and some are shocking behaviour it beggars belief!

In my previous career I encountered a lot of talking behind people backs and backstabbing but nothing that would be called bullying. Is this a common problem in the workplace?
What kind of work place is bullying more prevalent in - female dominated or male dominated?
It's an interesting topic and one that needs to be brought out - I mean bullying would certainly reduce someones work productivity and job satisfaction.
