Did anybody actually pick up on this? I did post the article way back at the start of this thread... After much research and having witnessed a massive furore over this 'art' (I always tend to be very skeptical of anything so inflamatory) it bears careful reading. Enjoy.
The idea of it is disgusting, particularly considering people did nothing.
Funny a hoax was mentioned... I did the google look-up, Wiki says the "artist" was born in 1975... and the other site near the top says the artist says he is 50 years old. Wiki also mentions a different outcome for the dog too - fed but escaped.
Never know what to think, but so many 'petitions' are popping up on the web now I am started to wonder the purpose and what they are expecting to achieve.
I was also skeptical about such a thing... and won't jump up and down just because I read something without investigating it a little more myself.
Still not even sure of what actually happened but it wouldn't have surprised me that it was a hoax or staged... and what it may actually mean is that the "artist" did something good and brought this to people's attention.
Although he may have achieved this and brought such things to light - it's really quite sad to think so many would have just hung him out just because they read something and assume it must be fact!
I don't want to be rude but I will be rude and say this sort of thing could only happen in a Spanish speaking country - the fact that the general public visiting the gallery were not perturbed in the least.
Again I'll point to this article as the 'best' proof that this was little more than a stunt. Obviously this is amazingly poor taste but these days anything goes doesn't it? After all, according a report by the UN a few months ago over 600,000,000 CHILDREN under the age of 16 are in slavery!
I am an animal lover myself (dog, cats, rabbits and several of the two legged variety), and cannot abide thinking of any kind of cruelty yet Animal Welfare organisations destroy literally thousands of animals every year in the UK alone.
Does anybody seriously think that this level of cruelty could be perpetrated in the public eye? I mean please, it just wouldn't work would it?
Giving tactit approval of such a stunt by signing a petition merely confirms what the artist set out to prove. That we are all hypocrites.
I belong to several other forums and this subject was dropped very quickly, back in May!
Slyle, as to the puppy being fed and watered - the dog was brought off the street; is a few days being fed and watered going to do much? Without seeing the animal in question, how could anybody really tell? Have we not heard of Photoshop?
According to one vet who specialises in working animals over 50% of them are overweight and a further percentage are obese. This is considered just as cruel!
Ok, stepping down gingerly from my high horse now, but I do think this topic should be locked. Mods anyone?
And not only needing Photoshop... just because a website or two might suggest watching the dog's condition deteriorate over a number of days - how can I be sure it's not be reversed and the dog's condition was improving?
I don't tolerate unnecessary cruelty, but I also don't believe everything I read without verification from a trusted source (such as myself).
Lions Den I agree we are all hypocrites. I agree also about animal welfare charities - any big orgainsied charity is a gangster organisation and its sole raison de etre is to carry on the status quo (the more cruelty, no cure for cancer etc there is, the longer they can stay in business)
However, if someone tried to save that dog - it would have made a difference to that dog - I'm saying hypothetically - (if it was tied up to be starved). By stating their are a million injustices in the world does not mean we can't make a difference by stopping or even helping one case. Even if we are hypocrites. Which brings me back to the artist - he is a hypocrite too - "I'll highlight cruelty by making something cruel"
lol slyle I understand where you're coming from. However, it 'appears' the dog was taken care of until the exhibit was closed after which it was released back onto the streets... Still an act of cruelty even if the dog was being fed and watered!
Arrgh, the whole circle just goes round and round. I think it is good to be made aware of ones shortcomings and not to forget things like this - I just think it's a little sad such a fuss has been made over this one animal.
But hey, do we resign ourselves to our fate or try to make even a tiny difference to the world? If the latter then there are other things to talk about...
I am still more than happy to acknowledge that this stunt was a cruelty itself.
