However what you might not realise is that it means across each of its networks (ie: the .com google, the .co.uk Google etc).
So you are told that you rank 12 for a keyword by webmaster. I can almost guaranteed that is for www.google.co.uk. When you check in Google you were probably checking against www.google.com.

When you are in Webmaster and looking at your top search postions, you should see a drop down box (It's actually a drop down arrow) next to the words All Searches All Locations. If you click on that you will see a drop down box called locations. You can select uk, USA etc.
By selecting UK, I bet you'll see yourself in position 12. One the USA one (ie: google.com) you will probably be much lower.
That is brilliant Mike thank you. I have checked and I have webmaster set for uk but I haven't worked out yet how to get google to search for uk too (it only gives me worldwide or Egypt).
Yes it's very annoying and someone needs to write a program so everything you look at gives you the same stats.
