Been down this road.Very tricky.Depends what your product is.
My advice is to try to produce the product your self initially.
I took a product around all the large manufacturers.Response in the main was "The idea has merit but we are not interested in producing it at the moment".
After a year of trying to punt the idea I lost heart.:sad1:
2 years later I saw my product being produced by one of the companies overseas branches where I had no patent protection.
That product is now in every garage and engineering works in the world.
The company involved had the letters DB in its title.
So tread very carefully.

I wasted ten of the best years of my life beating my head on those brick walls.
Red, You are in for a far tougher journey than I think you believe!
The answer is DONT EVEN SHOW IT TO ANYONE till you have proper protection in place, and a watertight non disclosure agreement
Sadly everyone you will meet is dishonest at some level , the only question is on what scale - in one case for me it was the VC I approached who ripped me off.
To get proper protection for the idea will cost you around £10-£30K depending on what it is and even then only if you do most of the patent preparation work yourself.
And you cannot even offer it for sale, until the protection is in place.
Just read dysons book if you want to see what unethical b*st*rds you are up against!
If you try to do it yourself you will find it copied in china or taiwan, beyond the range of the law...
And if you try to sell it, quietly behind your back, somebody will rip you off.
A nightmare world that still makes me shudder...
After years of being ripped off, I finally turned my back on that world, and
for that reason two of my best ideas, I have left in my head, where they will remain.....

Don't you think that even with the proper protection in place, it will still appear in China/Taiwan because of the lack of IP protection?
You cant go around constantly worried about knock offs. Concentrate more on the window of opportunity you have!
Remember the more succesful your product, the greater the chance of being copied - I would love to have the headache of protecting a succesful product than not doing anything and wondering 'what if'!
I dont know whether this thread is still live but I maybe interested in helping you develop your product.
I already have 2 products in production which I have designed and developed myself, I tried to introduce a third with little success; I couldnt afford to tool for it myself but tried to sell the idea, but with very little success ! Probably see that idea very soon knowing my luck !

I agree with this, dont let ideas bounce around in your head, sometimes its worth taking a risk, I have noticed that most people simply arent really that interested in taking your ideas. I have some very good contacts with the Patent libraries and all are very honest and trusting. My advice would be dont keep your idea to yourself, give it a go !
If you do read Dyson's book you will find he did it all wrong ! There are many other ways to obtain IP, not just patents, one of which is free. Dyson could of gone down this route rather than the expense of remortgaging his house etc.
