Default New website - feedback appreciated

    Hi

Just had a re-design of our site My Vintage and are looking for some honest feedback good or bad! - how easy the site is to navigate, any changes that could/should be made to improve sales, loading times etc

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

The basic layout looks fine to me. However I would try to do something about the white background - it just looks too flat and dull.

It would be nice if there was a cohesive design there, maybe something retro looking, it all looks a bit home made with so many diffrent styles, fonts and colours on one page.

Also the photos on the banner images look squashed to fit in which doesn't do wither your site or the photos justice.

So user-friendly wise I would say its fine, it just needs some deisng work.

Just had time for a quick 5 minute look and, from an accessibility and usability perspective, there are some things that you should aim to fix:

    1. Invalid XHTML - 31 errors and 1 warning. Web pages don't have to validate in order to be accessible, but in this case the problems do need fixing. You have not declared a character encoding type in your <head>, this can lead to some browsers not displaying the page correctly. There is a stylesheet reference in the <body>, this needs to go with your other stylesheet sources in the <head>. The other 30 errors are caused by not having alt attributes for your images. This is definitely an accessibility issue and should be addressed.
    2. The CSS does not validate, including 1 reference to a stylesheet that does not seem to exist.
    3. None of your links use a change of state on hover or focus. Again, definitely an accessibility, and usability, problem.
    HTH.

    It is image heavy:

The header alone, without being top quality, is over 400Kb.

Further to this, (which is basically a slow loading issue), the header and some of the larger pics look as though they have been 'squashed' into a predetermined sized box, which makes the models appear a bit dumpy.

You have nice gear, and it's a nice site, but images on sites like these are crucial, and I feel yours could do with a bit of TLC.

I like it - I think it looks good.

You need to do some search engine optimisation though. You have the word 'vintage' 54 times, but 'clothing' only 18 times and 'retro' only 16 times.

You need to reduce the number of times you've got the word 'vintage' down to around 30-35 times and increase the number of times you've got the words retro and clothing to a similar number.

I would also increase the number of time you use the word 'ladies' from the current 8 to around 18-19 times. You're using the word 'womens' three times, so change that to 'ladies' for a start!

That way, Google is more likely to pick up 'vintage clothing' as well as 'retro clothing', as well as 'ladies vintage clothing' and 'ladies retro clothing'. It would also rank you highly on 'ladies retro dresses' and 'ladies retro dress', for instance.

Good luck! It looks like you have an interesting business there.

I agree with Entro - the image files are HUGE, you really need to optimise them. Do you have photoshop or paint shop pro?

Also, the navigation bar down the left side could look more professional. have a look at the Hackett and ASOS websites. They both have nice-looking and easy to use navigation.

Other than that, it's good. I really like the stuff you're selling.

    Good luck!

    James.

I think it is good. Couple of things i noticed:

The images that are changing, can these be links? if im looking for a prom dress (ahem) then it would be good that that takes me straight there

I agree with the comments about too much white, on my 22inch monitor there is far too much white and i dont think i would stay on the site for long!

I also think the page is too long, there seems to be too much in the left column, personally i would look to redistribute this as it makes the site a little lop sided

The graphics don't feel very high quality to me. For example, the white torn pages on the graphic at the top of the page don't blend in correctly with the brown background.

Also, the "hot trends" image (which feels a bit gritty anyway) has been scaled the "wrong" way (by changing the height and width img attributes) which causes distortion. If you view it at its original scale it looks better.

I don't think the Facebook/Twitter/etc links on the left hand side require their own images, or at least images that big.
