My initial tip would be to change the colour of the forum to make it stand out from the crowd
There are a great number of skins and modifications you can make
Is there a welcome message you can add to your site so that unregistered users are offered an incentive to register and participate?
Re: Gaining members in a short time
Have you thought about leafleting your local builders merchants? (or engaging the services of the greasy spoon vendors who sell bacon butties to the masses) to get the message across?
Steve you are in a nice niche, yet you have used a url extension /forum I would consider something a little more on theme so your forum ends up with its own web presence. That and a spot of deep linking should help you on your way.

I see what your saying, but as a branch from the actual website, i thought it best to keep it all the same really. That way i was thinking that users want see too much "change" and no-one likes change-especially when i knock there door!!(door 2 door sales!! who needs it!!)
It's a great idea, but I'll have to admit that I find the template a bit dark. It's a lot easier to look at a clean, white forum skin than a dark blue/bright green one. If I was going to make just one change, colour scheme would be it.

Maybe my post was confusing, what I meant was a sub page url like /trade-forum is much better the /forum. By selecting the right keyword it will give your forum the chance to have its own identity with the engines.
