Edit: Although I admit having just taken another look, aside possibly from a very light blue, I am not sure that many other colours would work better than the grey.
Yeah, that was pretty much my conclusion. White would look too bright, black would look too dark. Any other colour might be too much colour for this type of site, and a bit overpowering. That only really leaves grey.

The blue that is used in the "quote" boxes on here could work (As in the blue background above what I have written).
I agree with IP2 in that it might be worth trying a lighter tint of the blue in your logo.
Try the following in your CSS for your body tag:
body {
background-color:#EFF7FF;
background-image:url(none);
font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
font-size:12px;
}
I think the light grey background you have now works well and possibly could be the best option, but it would be worth trying the above to see what you think.

Hmm, thanks for the suggestion but I'm not sure. I did actually manage to use CSS for most of the formatting this time, so it is something I can keep under review and easily change at any time.
Any suggestions on how to improve it would also be gratefully received
Carry out some stakeholder analysis, establish your stakeholders and do some needs analysis on the key stakeholders. Let that lead the design process.
In other words, suss out who your customers are, address their needs, create a design that meets those needs.
Taking this approach you can create a landing page that talks directly to your key stakeholders offering to solve their problems. This might take the form of a call to action for example.
After you have done this work you might have established there's a group of potentially lucrative stakeholders who are confused about tax. Your homepage then has big call to action....
"Confused About Tax? We Have the Solution that will Save You Money and Take Away the Pain......"
Under this might be a testimonial.....
"Bloggs and Smith took over my tax affairs and saved me £1500 on my tax bill!"
Talk to people, solve their problems but most of all don't let design lead the web development process.
Loving the new one, looks much more professional. Although don't like the logo
I would have thought it would look better when clicking on the links on the left that it would be better to have it all central like home page ?
Ahem, yes, I only put up a temporary page in this hidden location to test out the response. As it was universally preferred I am now converting all my pages to the new layout, and when they are done, I will upload them to their proper locations.
I actually like its new version. Its layout looks more clean and nice compared to the old one because its homepage is moved on the center which makes the site looks better.
