There is a feature in google analytics's that allows you to compare sites in your industry.

I get about 5000 uniques a month but without knowing my industry its meaningless. Web site visitors isn't a metric I use to judge success. To me its all about banner clicks, sign ups and commission.

Like a previous commenter said, use alexa. It's a good resource. I know you were just trying to start an intereting topic but a lot of us would be wary about sharing such data

I just checked my site on Alexa. Seems today I dont exist at all, other days I have a ranking around 145,00 in the UK. Alexa seems very hit and miss to me and I dont take anything it indicates as gospel.

Never use any public info as gospel as usually it is a lead in to sell you something...scrae tactics and all that. Use it as a guide onlu and over time you will arrive at stats that may assist in your trend analysis.

The only stats that are used as gospel to me are on my server logs.

Has anyone else noticied the variance between analytics stats and your hosting stats?

Massively Sandra...when I get some time I may dig deeper but for now, I just refer to my logs.

In some instances it may be up to 99% different

This includes the stats when I extract our local IP's from the breakdown...very odd indeed.

Yes. GA and other stats packages use javascript tags. Not all people have javascript turned on. Bots generally don't have javascript capability so won't show up in GA but will if you are looking in your server logs.

I prefer AWstats because it always shows more than GA. I know I get a fair bit of bot traffic which is counted but ignorance is bliss!

A client of mine was doing a report for her board (which includes the likes of Cherie Blair so of course we want to impress!) as I went to look at the hosting stats as well as analytics, I was stunned to see a massive double the difference (more) in the hosting stats than Google analytics. Needless to say client was over the moon in the sudden increase as she had been looking only at analytics stats. I don't normally bother with analytics myself so i'm now quite wary of them.

    Yes I prefer AWStats too

GA is better for most people. You don't want to be counting spam bots and unknown spiders in your stats. If you have a serious site where conversion funnels matter or are paying for advertising, you need GA or some other analytics package. Add a few visitors based on your AWstats but if you are looking at numbers best to underestimate than overestimate IMO.

Further to my earlier post I'm back on Alexa now with a ranking o 105,000th in the UK.

Being a relative newbie but having spent a lot of time on my own site I am confident in Google stats. However the best stats are my return on investment in advertising costs. On this basis my gross earning are around 8:1 and looking to improve on this as time goes on
