Well, no. the puropse of social bookmarking sites is generally to store, share, organise and manage your bookmarks - hence social bookmarking.

I think people do try to use them for promoting their own sites and projects. More along the lines of viral marketing.

It's also very much to do with 'brand-awareness' - many businesses are doing it subconsciously.

Social Bookmarking Sites' primary purpose is, as what many of the replies said, for sharing of websites, stories, articles you like on the web.
But ofcourse it will also create backlinks to those websites you created the bookmark. So in a way it will also increase their page rank.

StumbleUpon is very addictive - and it's a great way to find sites you would never have seen otherwise. Also, if you have a site, making it interesting enough to get "stumbled" can be a rewarding strategy in terms of visitors.

I agree StumbleUpon is one of the more interesting of these sites.

Perhaps the problem with all these sites is they are used more for gaming search engines than any altruistic reason such as sharing good stuff with others.
