SEO clarification....

Ask your web designer to implement a CMS for you that way you get to take most control dependant on the CMS system that is put in place.

You an build links in the mean time which will help your ranking with your existing keywords.

Yep quite right. Any changes to your current site are going to take time to come through. Best bet is to start on the SEO research stage for the new site.
