    Nice definition!

In my experience taking the time that you would spend creating your own links in forum sigs and blog commenting, etc (lets face it Google knows which they are) is well worth spent writing some really high quality, interesting content which people will link to naturally. Just one or two links in from relevant sites to a quality blog post or article you have written will likely (although as some said already its not an exact science) be worth much more than the sig and blog comment links you can create in that time. Seems what I spend most of my time doing of late... and it works... assuming your writing about something people are interested in of course lol!

I'm also experimenting with some 'interesting' content services for link development.

Maybe the most part of the links dont gona help your site, but they will contibute for your advertise and some one of them will give you the natural links to your site. In general links can give google an idea of your site by the title of the links.

Some good advice here, one of the key elements is anchortext. Using your specific keywords within an article/Pr or news story will be seen by google as contextual and natural. Effective pr is an important element of any business, high quality articles have the benefit of providing exposure and if submitted to the correct sites, effective anchortext links as well which will improve your serps.

    Agreed.
There are sites with 10 backlinks that outrank those with 1,000s - and it often looks to me like this is largely because of the anchor texts..

This may be more to do with the quality of the page that's linking. 1 good link will kick 1000 spammy links into touch. IMHO.

    Links ARE Usability

Foremost, links provide simple navigation between documents on a website. But in addition to regular site navigation, links dramatically increase the usability of site information since words within an article can be linked - or extended out in a tree-like manner - to many other documents of importance, like definitions, resources and items of interest, on-going, without interrupting the flow of the originating concept.

In the context of this discussion links are about improving search engine ranking. The quote above can also be seen here where there is more info.

I think you are right. 1000 spammy links from the same domain isn't going to hold much weight with the search engines.

If you go to ALEXA on the web and search for companies that are similar to yours, you can see who links to them and then try to get similar links to you.
