do PDF docs get SEO'd?

sorry if its a daft question but does the content of PDF documents attached to websites get included for SEO purposes?

A pdf (or many other docs - word, excel etc) will be indexed by Google, and can rank quite highly.

I tend to be a bit wary about getting pdf's indexed simply for the simple reason that if someone finds one of my pdf's through Google they will land on a page that just loads the pdf.

Where do they go next?

There's no menu for them to follow their way to other parts of the site.

Just my thought.

really helpful for my daft questions and take your point Mike about where to go next Mike as happened to me today for a really good website and had to enter the url in again as was trapped as couldnt use back button either!

Thats a very good point. What if you quote the direction they should go to get more info? ie website - can they highlight the text to cut and paste? I know that is hassle for the user but its even worse if they have to type the entire url in.
