I've just read an article saying that reciprocal linking is not a very good idea (especially with directories). The problem im finding is where to get one-way links from? Most plcaes want a links back i return!
Does anyone have a list of recommended places i could go?
I have paid for some such as Yahoo! business directory, Best of the Web & Scoot as they have high PR but i'd also like to find some much cheaper (free if possible) alternatives.
Any other link building techniques much appreciated please
Thankyou

lots of different ways to get links, try to think a little wider, the internet is a massive place.
what about writing articles, reviews, forum posts, blog posts, yahoo answers, squidoo, social book marking.......
dont think of a link as a link in the traditional sense. in other words, it is not like the reciprocal linking programs that used to work very well like Arelis for example. there are a wide variety of links available.
Also, worth noting, some links are very low quality and others you will find better results from.
I may do a post on linking at some point in near future, covering the good, the bad and the ugly. Am sure there is a film in that title somewhere
Thanks for the linking tool. I'll add that to my bookmarks.
I thought i was doing so well with my ranking the other day and i was not sure if this is related.
For 'Office Supplies' i was flying up the rankings and ended at 69th on friday but on tuesday dropped right back to 170th and 'office products' 56th - 111th and i wasn't sure if my reciprocals had an effect on this.
My other key terms we not effected though:
Discount office products (6th)
Discount office supplies (19th)
Discount Stationery (6th)

would you say that poeple use the word discount in their search? It wouldnt be something I would search on. Sure many do, but arent you better off optimising for a handful of popular products perhaps in additon to those youre doing atm?
I was considering picking a few of our most popular products/profit makers and optimising pages for them.
For example a page on 'A4 Copier Paper'
Is this what you mean? or more specific such as 'Canon a4 copier paper'
Thanks for your help

yeah I was thinking more like copier paper, office stationery. You see in my experience, its always been an admin persons job to search & resource for stationery products, and they wouldnt use certain wording such as 'discount' (usually thats what the type of wording budget-holder would search on!) except of course if your target market is sole traders wanting smaller volumes who might then use discount, cheap, etc.
OK. Thanks for the advice.
Sort of been teaching myself through books & forums so this is all valuable info.
Sorry for all the questions but just one more:
When building my links would you recommend using anchor text along the lines of 'Copier paper from Crane' to improve my rankings, or stick with a variation 'Crane Office Supplies' as my homepage is optimized for the the phrase office supplies.
Thanks again
