Okay after yonks of trying to get links I seem to be getting somewhere, most are reciprocal but they are from PR3 & 4 sites, however they are putting me on pages with PR n/a - are these worth the effort at all? Are they better than nothing?
I put their link on my blog rather than the main site but the blog is on my domain name.

Get one link with relevant anchor text from one well ranked page and it will do you more good than thousands of irrelevant recips - IMHO.
reciprocal linking is reducing in weight.
programmes like Arelis are to thank for this. lol
it also mentioned in the linking terms from the google guidelines, before diving into forum posts and opinions, take a look at the google guidelines as these are updated.
a forum post is often out of date if you are doing research, as the post maybe from weeks ago.
another point is that people read things in forums and then use it to pass the advice on, so it is easy to see how bad advice can be passed around.
read the guidelines.
if your site is only made up of reciprocal linking, you will not get anywhere near as much benefit as having a good spread.
linking is a skill and can be specialised or just 'thrown together'. if you want links then just play around with a few things and complain that it does not work. as per a great post by RayB and I think what Dave is alluding to.
A properly set up linking campaign will include many different techniques from various places.
As with most SEO, there is not usually a quick easy fix with instant wow results.
