Default Directories, etc...

Hi guys,

I understand that it is generally beneficial, in SEO terms, to register your company on various relevant online directories. However, I'm not entirely clear what qualifies as relevant and at what point search engines start to take a dim view of this activity. Is this a really worthwhile activity or is it just benefiting providers.

Any advice and guidance would be welcome.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Ok, simple scenario.

Your site is about Pet food. A non-relevant link would be to a porn site.

A relevant site would be to a site selling pet products etc etc.

It's quite logical.

Try searching for;

*keyword* Directory
*keyword* links
*keyword* listings
etc.

that should hopefuly help you find directories which have categories
related to your keyword/phrase.

I think the question was how worthwhile is this activity, although UKSBD's advice for finding relevent directories is good!

In terms of how worthwhile it is then you have to ask two questions

1) Is it a directory that in itself will send traffic? If the answer is yes, then yes, it's worthwhile.

2) Is this a directory that is truely relevent to my market? Answer, yes then submit your details.

However spending hours and hours find such directories is probably not worth it.

As per Kingpin's advice, if you go for directories that are not relevent to you then yes it will hurt.

OK?

Ta

Mike
