How important are Alexa rankings?
What are the rankings related to?
Do they have any weight in the credibility and worthiness of an individual site?
Is it important to have a good ranking?
What can you do to improve your ranking?
Lots of questions I know but any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks KP.
If I'm not manipulating the system and see my site improving up the Alexa ranking, is this positive? If more people with Alexa toolbars are viewing my site, then perhaps are proportionate amount of people without it also are. Or is this wishful thinking?
If your not manipulating the system and your Alexa ranking is going up then that just means more people are viewing your site who are using the toolbar (obviously) but you have to take into account it could be a repeat visitor who may not have the tooldbar installed the first time they visited your site.
And the Alexa toolbar users maybe be repeat visitors which will increase your ranking.
The amount of people who use the Alexa toolbar doesn't even represent 1% (idon't think) of the people who use the web so the only true estimation will be from your stats package and server logs.
Aslong as your traffic is rising month by month and your seeing an increase in business and botton line then they are the only stats that matter
What are the rankings related to? - People who have the Alexa Toolbar installed
Do they have any weight in the credibility and worthiness of an individual site? - No
Is it important to have a good ranking? - Not really
What can you do to improve your ranking? - Download Alexa toolbar and just keep refreshing your home page and ask your mates to do the same.
Alexa can easily be manipulated.

Well although I agree with most of what you say.
I can see a scenario where sites selling the same products and with a very high visitor rate, could have the same average amount of Alexa toolbars installed based on the laws of average.
So as A comparitive tool could have some relevance.
I think this may best be demonstarated if one views there figures for google et al.
Totally agree with KingPin.. Alexa ranking is pointless and totally unreliable.
If I want to rank highly in Alexa, I simply instruct my staff to add the Alexa Toolbar to all our computers, as I have done in the past. But given that Alexa is no more than Spyware, that decision was also reversed!
Alexa is a totally pointless comparison, on par with deciding if an Airline is successful by counting how many people wear Puma shoes on a series of flights.
