For a small side project, the keyword.me.uk is the only term available. Based on what the experts have been saying, should i go for something else. Is .me.uk worth it at all?
Thanks

Sure. Of course it's not as "strong" as other extensions but if you get the SEO stuff right it will do well.
Unless of course the same keyword is available in one of the more popular extensions (which it isn't as you said).
Edit - I should say it's not really an ext to build a business on though because it doesn't carry as much branding power as the .com/.co.uk.

Yes it is. .com, .co.uk etc are all available.
Then get the .com/.co.uk. Forget the me.uk.

oops. KP, I mean't - not available.
For SEO purposes the extension is of no importance.

Having a keyword rich domain is of paramount importance for SEO.
For other reasons .com and .co.uk are prefered.

From personal experience I wouldn't touch .me.uk domains - there are some domain extensions that just won't rank in Google without exceptional attention.
Personally, I think you need to think outside of the direct keyword and consider issues such as adding prefix/suffix around your keyword.
When you get creative with this process, you can find an amazing availability of very strong and brandable keyword domains on .co.uk and .com. Try that.
I listed a few here:
