This subject gets banded about a lot, my opinion for what it's worth is this.
If 2 identical websites in terms of strength and you placed your link on both, on relevant one not, will your site score zero points for the site that is not relevant? I doubt it very much. Would your site score more points with the relevant site, possibly yes.
