Just doing a little bit of research and trying to understand why certain sites are ranking for pet supplies.

So taking the top one as an example what have they done that is better than my site, just thinking homepage here.

Looking at the text version in google cache of both, mine looks slightly better - doesnt it?

There is not much in it with regards meta title but they do use pet supplies in their meta description and keywords.

Yahoo site explorer says that they have 1,275 inlinks and I have 2,299, if I exclude both of our domains from the respective searches then they have about 90 more than me. Example site is also older than mine.

So, in your opinion what is it that gives this site the top spot ?

On the meta description and keyword tags, I am fairly sure that Google ignores the latter and so they will not make any difference. But Google does use Description, so I would think that must be an important factor.

I think your biggest problem is lack of Google links.

I would estimate that he has at least 10 times the links from google that your site does.
