I haven't done any work on my site for about 3 months now, no link building, no on-site SEO, absolutely zilch. I have even stopped all my adword campigns for it. Reason being is as I have been so busy on the eBay side of the business and also the fact myself and Khalid have been working on a new site (which should be going live soon).
While working on the new site and adding products to it today I just realised (while doing checks through Google) a lot of my keywords have shot up on to pages 1 and 2 in the SERPS. I was struggling to get them higher than page 10, 11, 12, 13..... the last time I checked!
The only two things I can point this out to is patience and the paid Yahoo directory listing, the latter which Ray suggested to me about three months ago. This was the last thing I did.
So there you go! Things should get even better with the new site (with such clean code, the current is roobish) and with more SEO (if I ever get the time!).
I hope everyone is well and your business/es are booming, haven't been around for a while, but once the site is up and running I'll be back to pick up on all your SEO ideas!

Why do you thing 'Proper' SEO's tell their clients it will take a few months to start seeing the benefit of the work done? Links need to age to get their full value of link juice. Thgis is something Google put in place to prevent short term gaming of the Algo by link buying.
Congratulations on the rise, how has business been improved? My guess is not a lot or else you would have been wondering where the extra business was coming from rather than tripping over a rise in rankings
Yeah, your right the 'Proper' SEO's guys alway say this and this proves them right! Shame I never had a 'Proper' one, bar one!
I haven't seen any extra business increase to be honest. Most of our sales for the gadgets come through froogle and adwords, the latter which is currently paused. Though I'm sure with a some more SEO work the organic sales will start coming through.
Just a bit too busy for the site at the moment but I am trying to make time for it, especially with this new one coming up. Once live I'll get the adwords running again.

Did your domain happen to pass a "new year" in this time? Did you happen to see an increase in your pagerank in this time?
James.
No page rank increase yet on the main page, but there has been some 'inner' pages that have had some PR added to them.
My domains DOB is 04/2006 according to SEO Firefox (though I'm sure it is a year older, could be wrong), not sure if it was that. I do know for a fact that the position in the SERPs were not this high in May/June.
I think the Yahoo directory has played a big role in this.
