Ray went through the basics of this on another forum a while back.
The steps Ray mentions assumes you have hosting which supports .htaccess (which you might not have if you are on Windows IIS hosting rather than linux apache hosting), and that your apache hosting environment has mod rewrite support.

It's built in to Wordpress, you don't need a plug in. In Wordpress 2.5/2.6 go to Settings and then click on the Permalinks tab. There you can select the URL format. You might need to manually update your .htaccess file if Wordpress can't access it, but it will give you instructions.
I have found the settings button and am playing with this now, also thanks for the link, I remember Ray posting about this in the past just didn't know in which forum.
Have already put in the apache mod rewrite just hadn't done the custom thingy in the Permalink section. Off to give that a try now.
Cheers

Thanks for the observation, however I am only the apprentice, chief bottle washer and goofer (not the SEO doing the training) and have just set myself the task of learning all about blogs.
We all have to start somewhere and I just remembered that there are several people on here who are extremely experienced with wordpress blogs and was hoping for some quick advice which I got.

You and Tin must have gone to the same school Bet you also tell her that you learnt the hard way and it's the best way.
It is very satisfying though, knowing that I have done it all myself, got a bit of a warm glow at the moment, having achieved most of my blog the way I want it
