The important of description meta tags

Now it is often argued that search engines pay no attention to Meta tags in a ranking a site.

Well this site bellow ranks No 3 for "jet ski parts"

and its done mainly on his description meta tag.

put www. before it and look at the source code.

misinformation is rife in the SEO community,especially amongst the book reading newbies who take everything as gospel.

That is quite gobsmacking Alvin and goes against everything I have been told about meta tags

Question though, is that site just working off previous ranking (as they say they are redesigning the site)?

Pretty confusing init .but here is the logic.

Is the Meta Description Tag Worthwhile?

Apparently there was a conversation on Google Groups that provided backing for the argument that meta description tags aren't worthless.

For most of us in the SEO community, it's a contentious debate. Do the major search engines consider meta tags when determining relevance? Which ones do and which ones don't? How relevant do they consider meta tags?

The common wisdom is that meta description tags have been largely discredited due to spam and are generally ignored by the search engine algos. Google specifically has been implicated in devaluing them, which is why this tidbit is so juicy. Assuming for a moment that Google doesn't factor meta tags in for relevance, why would a Google representative suggest using them?

Am loving that. Just trying to get my head round the numbers, in that short page uses the keywords:

Jetshack 3 times
jetski 9 times
jet ski once

strong h1, 2 & 3 tags

all rolled up in good description, title and meta tags

It is the perfect idiots guide for us newbies because it doesn't have masses of content or codeo deal with.

Assuming the site was highly ranked before they started redesigning it, how long would it take for that to lose it's ranking or do you believe it is being ranked purely on what is there now?

Am even more confused now. I did a google search for specialist seo and specialist seo (who they say does that sites seo) doesn't up on the list - surely if they are that good at seo they should come up on the first few pages of google. Am I missing something?

Is 3am here, so off to bed - so much to think about.
