I have just picked up a fantastic google book. We're using it as a 'bible' to SEO specifically with Google. It has some amazing ideas and tips. If you're interested the ISBN number is 978-1-905940-49-3. It was only £8.99 and takes about 4-5 hours to digest, but its well worth it in my opinion.
Taking what I have learnt from it, I don't think there would be any advantage to adding a map link at all. But that is off of the back of reading this book.
I'm not slating any book at all, on a subject that I know very little about, but it always seems to me that books about fast changing subjects such as SEO are out of date by the time they're printed.
I wouldn't recommend a printed book for SEO/SEM. There is everything you need on decent forums like this one.
I would not understand a book anyway I remember buying SEO for Dummies once, and couldn't get passed the first page I found the forum the very best place for tips and advice and I am beginning to understand a bit now
Personally I don't see the point in placing maps on your site, as all you will do is tell people where your people live, and as this is an 'in your house' service, there is little benefit. people know where 'Wells' or Portmead is if they live in that area, just the Same as I know how far away Swansea is or any of the other areas in South Wales.

Don't waste your time.
I'm of the opinion though that a picture saves a thousand words. Now if content is king, that could be bad thing for seo. However a map showing the areas you cover can't do any harm. For me, we do use maps, but it's more about content for people rather than SEO.

Dragonfly, I think you missed the point I made. Nina was proposing having a google map/Multi map on the individual pages of the sitters showing where they are. THAT is a total waste of time as the sitters on't offer an at home service, they carry out the service in the area around them. A map of the UK on the homepage showing areas covered is fine IF you have enough coverage. maybe an individual map coloured to show the are covered would help rather than a list, but that is not what was proposed.
Do I think maps would help Nina? ABSOLUTELY I do. personally I would have on the home page a map of the UK showing areas covered, and areas that are getting enquiries but are not covered. I would use this map to encourage people to apply to become sitters, as well as to show areas covered.
The reply I made had absolutely nothing to do with 'SEO' it was from a practical point of view. The question was relating to maps and being 'Google friendly'
