Your options are "always", "hourly", "daily", "weekly", "monthly", "yearly" or "never". The value "always" should be used to describe pages that change each time they are accessed. The value "never" should be used to describe archived URLs
Interesting article. What is everyone elses opinion on this. Can sitemap priority really affect your rankings that much?

Yup they can mess things around, another bad mistake is to assume that all SE's can use sitemaps Live & Ask can't so your main navigation needs to be in place firstly and sitemaps second.

My theory on sitemaps is that without them, Google builds the hierachy skeleton of the site, and IT decides the importance of pages.
Most site owners submit a sitemap and THEY decide on the importance of pages by altering the value . Although this is simply an internal value, it is there for a reason. I think that this value is throwing page importance out of the window, and this is the reason for spidering problems and lost rankings. A simple clash of technologies.
