In most business forums there are SEO related sections, a place for healthy debate on the latest maneuvers of the big G.
In these forums you generally get 3 types of people
The seasoned campaigner, these are the people who kindly give up their own time to help people out, asking nothing in return.
The people who may not know much about SEO but engage in good discussions and are a focal point of the community
The 'others' as I will refer to them, these are the people, (there are many here) that give nothing their sole aim is to ask as many questions as possible about their own website. Giving nothing to the community at all, in fact the thought never crosses their minds.
Now lets be honest, people who work in the SEO sector are not going to give away their own 'tricks of the trade', practices they have perfected over many years. What they are willing to do, is pass on generalised information, that will steer people on the right track. The rest is down to the site owner to get out there and start learning for themselves or employing someone.
The people who fall into the first 2 categories I applaud your efforts in helping people out and keeping the community spirit alive, here at UKBF Lite, as I heard it called by some egotistical vermin.
To people who fall into the last category....wise up!
At first I thought the question sounded a bit personal
but since you elaborated...
Like Alvin, not sure I would consider those 3 as boxes everyone can be put in, and it's not only SEO.
In numerous forums, I see people that also are obviously there to chase any possible opportunity they can. Not so obvious to a new visitor seeking help to then have someone offer relevant services... but for those of us that keep constant tabs it becomes quite obvious some are looking only to line their own pockets and if that's not likely they just keep quiet.
Asking is not the best solution Alvin, all you get is one viewpoint, as you know its all about research and experimentation.
Most people have a fair handle on optimisation, there is certainly enough data on the subject. To that end when someone is looking for in-depth advice, they should post more details of their own research and theories. Instead of why is this site ranked above me and what do I have to do. These kind of questions don't warrant an answer.
I'm guessing that I may been seen as one of the later. Has it occurred to you that I may help in other areas, but am not confident enough on SEO matters to contribute answers.
However by asking questions I stimulate discussion. And yes I may be interested in my own website, wouldn't any business owner, but surely the problems I have must be similar to the problems others have.
ps I posted this in response to your first post, however as this is the one recieving discussion I reposted it here.
Instead of why is this site ranked above me and what do I have to do. These kind of questions don't warrant an answer.
And suppose somebody has done what they can see, but still can't see the reasons for the very low rankings. May they've misunderstood something, overlooked somthing, they may well have read everything they can find with reason, but still can't figure it out.
Like you say giving away your golden egg would be silly, however general pointers for people to reasrch won't do any harm.
SEO guy I understand where your coming from, but as stated by Dragonfly ,users have different skills in different areas.
I have been constantly amazed at the spread of knowledge and skills that various members have across the board and have therefore benefited in areas away from SEO.
And David do we all not want to line our pockets.?
Asking about your own website isn't a problem, that's what forums are for and I don't mind helping out where I can. No one HAS to reply to those type of posts if they don't want to.
James.

Of course most, if not all of us want to line our pockets... but it touches also how we go about it and what it brings to the forums - as well as the type of people in forums.
Forums really wouldn't that crash hot if most people simple posted in expectation of making money as a direct and immediate result.
I must fall into the third category then and am quite upset by your comments whether you meant them to be the way I have taken them or not.
I ask many questions as I have very little understanding in SEO, I ask them because I feel that other people may also benefit from the answers. However I contribute in other ways on the forum and am always willing to give advice on the areas of business that I do know about mainly Insurance.
