Right, is it better when thinking about SEO for your site to
1. "have a go yourself" (when you know nowt about it , just how important it is) or
2. pay someone to do it or
3. pay someone to teach you?

Well, why not send as many Christmas ecards as you like for only £5.99, save a fortune, put your company name on the message and be green at the same time
If you are serious about the web and want to develop a strong online presence it's always going to be worth learning about SEO unless you have a sensible budget to employ an SEO in-house or commercially.
Following basic simple check lists can have a real impact on your site's search engine performance.

You get companies who offer SEO services for £99 a month, I'd avoid these. SEO freelancers will work for anything from £25/hr to £100/hr and more. I would expect you'd secure the services of a good SEO for around £40/hr or if you were to employ one a salary of around £35k plus benefits.

I would say that you could have a really good stab at "having a go yourself", you have more than one friendly SEO peep right here who, I am sure, would be more than willing to guide you through the do's and don'ts of things. You should hopefully have a search engine friendly site already so it is just a case of implementing all the good advice that is freely about. Just run things by your trusted SEOs first to ensure that any advice you pick up is good as it is very easy to pick up bad advice as well as good.
You can't go far wrong having a good old read of RedEvo's blog, plenty of useful ideas there. I'd hazard a guess that OWG's blog is full of good advice too, I am ashamed to say I haven't looked yet, going to have a little peek now.
Anyway, I bet you know a shed load more about SEO than you give yourself credit for.
