As most of you know, amongst other things, we sell cars over the internet (car brokers).
When we started off we looked at PPC as a way to get out name up there, but on our key words the cost was prohibitive, so I turned to good old fashioned DIY SEO (far too many TLA's already!).
I added a blog to the website, and post frequently with news of the business, the industry etc. Some "key words" that I tartgeted get us no-where, whilst others are ranking us ridiculously high (google "BMW 125" for example and you'll see us somewhere on page one in the top three).
What I want to know is - how does it work?
I've read up on keyword saturation points, densities etc, but when I look at how we compare on our keyword searches, nothing adds up!
Is there, anywhere, a definitive guide for how this stuff works? I would like keep our performance level across many entries, but haven't a clue what I'm doing "wrong" in some instances, or so very "right" in others!
Any advice gratefully received.
Justin

I read stuff all day long about how it supposed to be done, but when I see sites that rank high for no reason we can see, then it kinda doesn't stack up somehow.
Tell me about it.... when I "follow the rules" nothing happens, then when I just chuck something up we end up top entry! I was top entry for Rolls Royce Motors on google a few weeks ago... the words were only on my website three or four times!

there is no guaranteed 100% certain way to do it and that is the answer. However, following all the right guidance should see no reason why you shouldnt get there.
When competition for a phrase is hot then quality content plus quality links and an established domain will usually win the day.
There are of course many other factors that we can't know with any certainty. Taking your BMW 125 example there are only 1800 pages in the Google index with that exact phrase in the title element. Still a good result , but not too much competition.

You know how sometimes you read a testimonial and you think "yeh right, he either wrote that himself, or it is family"? Well THAT is how google works!
You know how sometimes you look at a site and it is super slick and you think WOW this is good, but when you start reading it you realise it is all fur coat and no knickers? Well google does that as well.
BUT, you know sometimes you trip across a site, it is obviously home made or low budget, and you know how once you start reading it is real quality information, and you know how you think "this is gREAT, I am going to bookmark this"? Well google does that as well
In life, sincerity is everything, once you learn to fake that, the world is your oyster LOL
Seriously though, if a page is obviously professionally SEO'ed then it can qickly be put on the 'hmmmm pile, but if it is natural, then it will automatically tick the right boxes.
All of that said, the pages you just throw together are probably for the phrases you are not really taking seriously, so as pointed out earlier, the competition ois less.
I’m not just saying this because I work in SEO but you really want to hire someone who know how do this, however if you have the time and bucket loads of patience have a go but if your business needs to start making money quickly then hire a good SEO firm there are two articles on our site that you may find interesting.
