Our database records similar data to analytics such as number of visits etc. We seem to be seeing quite large differences between the number of visits analytics says we receive and what our database records.
Is there some alternative software we can install to see if that agrees with our database or analytics?
I cannot recommend Clicky highly enough. Not only does it seem to be reliable, it also has instant access to stats and a truly addictive spy feature which means you can watch activity in real time!
You can also try Awstats. I use this along with Google Analytics. In Awstats, you can view how many visits the website received over a period, where the visits came from, and what keywords were used.
my only issue with clicky is that damn 'get clicky' banner. is there an option to use it without the banner? I ahve no issue paying for the service, but I baulk at paying for a service then advertising that service on every single page

Just remove the bit of code that put's the clickable image in.
Reduce this....
Code:
<a title="Clicky Web Analytics" href="http://getclicky.com/xxxxxx"><img alt="Clicky Web Analytics" src="http://static.getclicky.com/media/links/badge.gif" border="0" /></a>
<script src="http://static.getclicky.com/xxxxxx.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<noscript><p><img alt="Clicky" src="http://in.getclicky.com/xxxxxx-db5.gif" /></p></noscript>
Frankly speaking, i used clicky's service for a few months and since i am not too much interested in getting my stats live, didnt find it adding much value. Am back to the tried and tested google/awstats combo.
