Yep searching for "same day courier" I finally get listed at approx 250!!!

I was wondering if you might want to add a few other terms into your key search phrase - e.g. 'same day courier York' or 'same day courier Yorkshire' and try rank for those terms as high as possible.

We actually have about 16000 pages with different place names as the focus of the page. Depending on the size of the place we rank anywhere from no.1 to well down for these.

That will be a big factor in getting up the listings for 'same day courier', I assume you didn't hand type them all

what you need to do now is to work on some 'gentle' link building for it.
