First one is to get quality links from relevant sites. Google will pick up it is a link from something related to what your site (or webpage) is about and this gives strength compared against a link from any other irrelevant website.
You would be better going to the SEO forum on A1 and reading through the relevant posts, because link building has been covered by the SEOers in there.
submit good articles with good keyword anchor text
Submit your website to directories
Start a reciprocal or triangular link campaign
Attract link bait on your site by having unique content or something that will attract people to naturally link to your site.
Great link - remember when building links it is important to make it all seem natural so you need some low value links, medium value links and then some super powered links for high PR rated sites. Mix and match your link text as much as possible to also create a natural feel. Articles are a good starting point and get them submitted to the major directories such as ezinearticles - hope this helps.

I agree with the sentiments of this. My problem with it is I see rubbish sites ranking on competitive terms with link profiles that are so obviously spammy it's a joke.
I know the argument is "we'll win the day in the end" but meanwhile the cheaters are winning and doing very nicely. It's a shame the engines can't do more.

I agree - very frustrating but think of the bigger picture and take the morale high ground - let them have the traffic for the short space of time and then watch them sink whilst sipping your favourite bottle of red wine - I have being in your shoes many times and I am sure I will again but Google is cracking down more and more on this, so stick to your guns and you will be ok.
