Despite my site at http://www.strictlyadmin.co.uk being online now for about three years I am having trouble getting it very high on google. I know that obviously secretarial services are very competitive with a huge amount of sites but can anyone make any suggestions as to what I could to to improve where I am right now.
Redesign the site, it looks a bit dated. Give it a modern professional feel. I suggest using images of people in the workplace, a little bit more corporate looking but not like a multinational
Get a professional web designer to do it and one who knows about SEO (search engine optimisation). They'll advise you on basic up-to-date concepts. Like getting rid of the links page.
Right now your site has no real keyword focus. Your title tag is too long (the bit at the top left of your web browser that tells you the name of the page) and it's stuffed with inappropriate and under performing keywords. So to is your meta description. As for your keywords tag, though no longer so important, it's stuffed worse than a turkey at christmas and all this might be getting you penalised.
Your site content is not compelling and there is no call to action. You need something to engage your visitors.
I just did a search for virtual secretary uk (I'm guessing) and there are about 273,000 results. This shouldn't be a hard area to dominate. About 440,000 results for virtual assistant uk. Look at the top sites for these searches and study them thoroughly. If you don't have a budget to get a web designer then buy a web template and after studying your competition, do what they're doing. At the same time, study SEO techniques and go one better than them. Just do a search for SEO techniques and get reading. It will be a plod, it will take months but 6 months from now you might be generating serious leads and business.
If you are pitching to get it seen for "secretarial services" then that is hugely competitive and IMHO without a lot of work and a lot more related content on your website you won't get it there.
It may be better to think through other terms by which people would search for what you do and try to optimise for two or three of the best. But for that to work you still need to consider adding some more content that will be focussed upon your key words.
The site was designed by a web designer, albeit three years ago and I do agree it needs updating now so I will get that sorted and also look into the SEO.
It wasn't done by someone who knows SEO that well. Before you spend lots on a redesign, get examples of their work for a site with a similar backlink situation and competetiveness as yours, and make sure they can show you large rankings rises *on terms that make you profitable*
I was aware to be honest that way back then they didn't know SEO that well, however, three years down the line they do now so really my fault for not doing something about that sooner.
Just to reiterate what has been said, concentrate on the basic SEO aspects first, then you can begin to evaluate your design. In a very competitive market, you must allow more time than usual after your changes to take effect.
Why not research and see if you can spot some longtail searches to kick off?
No point in having a super duper site if it cannot be found.
