should you use your homepage to target primary keywords
Hi all,
Say you have identified what you think are going to be your "best" keywords - ie will convert the best for you. Should you use your homepage to target them? Or give each one their own optimised page? Or both??
I understand the idea of creating unique page content for each keyword just a bit confused as to which keywords to target with my homepage

EDIT - forgot to say, this is my first post on here... HELLO EVERYONE!
you would use the keywords most relevant (ie best) to the content of each page. Your home page would normally use keywords which reflect what you do as a business and other pages will usually be more specific keywords relevant to the business.
There is no rule that your homepage must rank for any keyword. As Indizine has said, your homepage is really just that, its a general welcome page. The cover of your book. The judging should go on inside the site, not necessarily all focussed on the cover. It's much easier to develop individual pages to focus each keyword. When visitors search they will arrive at the optimised page for each keyword. As long as that page has compelling content and a call to action, even if it is to get them to go to your shopping cart, you should do better than if you try to optimise your homepage for all your keywords.
Your home page is generally given the weighting for page rank and equity passed through the other pages, so it should be well optimised and you should be optimising all of your important content pages not just the home page.
