Competitor Keyword Research

Not been on for a while just had a new baby and havnt had chance.

I am wanting to build a new website and have three or four big competitors. I want to work out if it is worth my time and effort to try and compete with them.

I really need to know what keyowrds they are targeting so I can see what I would be paying etc. Does anybody know of a way I can get this information without paying through the eyes and nose?

Basically waht I want to know is what search terms they are targeting, how many searches per day these terms get and as much more info as possible. Pay per click terms and organic terms would be great. Needs to be specific as would be using it for a business plan aswel as for my new site.

Anybody have any ideas?

Check their page title elements, meta description and on page elements such as H1. If their sites have been optimised there should be some clues there.

Also check their link profiles to see what anchor text they are using.

BUT check the keywords for search volume to make sure you are not all missing a trick
