I think it's true what I read that directories like DMOZ have so little real value to the user for the main reason that so much of what was posted there is historic and has not been reviewed for ages.
It's good news for so many though that seemed to have elevated rankings because of their DMOZ listing rather than the value of their site in terms of its content.
There have been a lot of corruption allegations aimed at DMOZ, so little wonder this happened. Also could mean that Google will move away from DMOZ in their own directory and set up their own human edited version.
So what is the way forward if directories become greatly devalued? Most of my link building has been around directories so far.
Social bookmarking and blogging?
The obvious is great content but content alone doesn't get you to the top without the links.
Do you think this could devalue some of the work you SEO guys offer? I notice OWG offers a directory submission service
