Does having your own individual IP address affect how well you rank in the search engines? ie does or can, sharing an IP address reduce the ranking of a site?
Now you know I am blonde and hate anything technical, with or without wires attached!
In my shared hosting plan, I had an option to pay extra for a dedicated IP address so it must be do-able.
Anyway, the question hasnt arisen from there. A potential customer sent me their other quotation for me to compare and its mentiond in their features list, that having a dedicated IP address stops other sites who are otherwise sharing your same IP address, from reducing search ranking of each other.
that having a dedicated IP address stops other sites who are otherwise sharing your same IP address, from reducing search ranking of each other.
Cannot answer it all (maybe Phil can jump in) but as for this point, there are too things to consider
1 it may not help you in performance/ranking as the contention will still be there as opposed to dedicated (ie x number of sites still being accessed on this server)
2 It may also not help if one of these sites gets banned (IP C Blocking) as they may be 'masking' your IP..in other words it is unique to you BUT that is for cosmetic only....
as stated, maybe Phil or some other hosting tech can jump in but that is my layman view...I stand to be corrected
Do not think you can do that can you? I thought that you had to be dedicated/vps for that privelege?
(awaits to be corrected and shown a URL)
IP addresses are not restricted to one per physical server, some dedicated server packages offer several IP addresses. With shared hosting an extra IP address is assigned when a hosting client requires an SSL certificate, so there could be many shared hosting clients on the same server with their own SSL and their own IP address.
As for it affecting search engine ranking, it is an interesting thought, and who knows? I wouldn't categorically say yes or no on this, although if it did I don't think its influence would be too strong.
Another issue is whether the inbound links come from websites on the same IP address (same server), or similar IP range (C-class), which might be of influence too.

Dedicated IP addresses are normally only used for securing site with a SSL certificate as I have to justify the issue of each IP address within ARIN guidelines.
I'm yet to see any evidence that a shared IP address affects SERPS, if it does it means that 99% of the hosting companies round the world will have to issue millions of IP addresses
AFAIK, Google uses the IP for geo-location primarily so unless the IP address has been earmarked as hosting dodgy content I cannot see how it will be affected.
