    Damm hyphens

I believe one in the main URL is fine, the trouble was the boot boys started ripping the arse out of it, so we would see www.e-bay.com then www.e--bay.com and so on.

In the url extension I like to use them for keyword separation, although news is Google now sees the underscore as a space.

I am working on www.the-little-things-in-life.co.uk has been a bitch to optimise, although orders are up with a great spread throughout the search engines, the primary term wedding jewellery is proving difficult.

In an attempt to combat duplicate content issues, I have introduced an on page comments box, for purchase reviews and next comes embedded video. If anyone is interested I will post the results in a few months

In the early days Googles spider wasn't able to read keywords in a URL without the hyphens. So if your domain was getmoneyfast the spider wouldn't be able to break up the word into 3 separate keywords thus making SEO much harder. Nowadays Google's spider has evolved and is now able to read individual words without the hyphens.

I think awebapart hit it right on the head in the very first page of this thread.
I certainly do not believe that it would be difficult to give out hyphenated urls over the phone or in a conversation.

I would avoid too many hypens in a domain name. One if fine, but two or three tends to look spammy.

I'd suggest this isn't always the case.
