I have a database of 75,000 inbound links, bearing mind the building process needs to be natural, looks like I am set for the next 20 years....lol

I also don't push my own site that much as I have more than enough work

I have a similar situation with my company's old website www.abstractworlds.com - it hasn't really been changed in the last few years but it is currently page 1 position 7 (it used to be higher) for the popular competitive term 3d games (according to google adwords 3d games gets 22,200 exact searches per month, search engine optimisation gets 33,000 exact searches per month on average, but for Feb 2008 both terms got the same around 27,100 exact searches).

During Feb, my company site got 23 visits for that search term from live, 80 so far this month. There could be a lot of reasons why people searching for 3d games don't click on my listing, for example the listing explains clearly that the site has 3D games for PC and mobile phones only, and a lot of people could be searching with Xbox, Playstation, PSP, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS in mind.

My site is nowhere on google (page 57) and nowhere on yahoo (page 8) for the same term, and that really is as it should be, since the site was never actively SEO'd - although it did end up with quite a few inbound links due to way the games were marketed.

Be careful what you wish for. I had an interesting chat last week on another forum with a guy who was top of google for web design, which he described as "pretty useless rankings".

The main point for having a high ranking for sector relevant terms is 'validation'

Due to the nature of the work I do, there are only 3 real metrics I should be judged by

    1. The ranking of my own site,in competitive sectors
    2. The ranking of the sites I have worked on
    3. The profitability of these sites since I started working on them

As I am able to provide positive answers to all of these points, it means I have less of a problem securing work, than businesses who state they don't have a high ranking on their own site as they do not have the time.

"Pretty useless rankings" are his words not mine, and I think one of the reasons why his site attracted a lot of time wasters to his company was because the site didn't filter out the time wasters by mentioning prices and providing other information.

I would certainly find a number of uses for a site that was google page 1 for web design or search engine optimisation. One of those uses is as you say:

I wonder how cut-throat getting to, and staying on, page 1 of google for search engine optimisation is? What grey or black hat techniques come into play? Whether black hat techniques to down-rank competitors come into play too?

Not sure about black hat, bigmouthmedia have already had a ban, 16,000 hidden words on a postage stamp...lol

I do know they all monitor each others links like hawks and currently build their link profile via tosh blogs.

You are right about monitorisation, its my next step

    Seach engine optimisation 19th
    Internet marketing services 15th

Not a huge jump, but interesting that my one man band operation can compete

I know where the guy is coming from.

Hence why I state that I would not want to be No 1 for SEO.

As I would spend most of my time dealing with time wasters, with no hope sites ( non viable products ) who wanted to pay pennies (seen adds for SEO from 99 pence.e.t.c).

If your gonna be No1 make sure your No1 for a product the buying public want.

    Kudos don't pay the rent.

Alvin you are right but terms like seo and search engine optimisation are still relatively new, in 10 years time they will be much more popular than they are today

If I am still doing SEO in 10 years,I will take myself off to a little Swiss clinic for disposal.

SEO may have a new name in 10 years.?
