There are no vaccines on the market so what are they on about "untested" for - the vaccines that have been produced have to go through a strict process of testing (in Australia I believe) as all seasonal flu vaccines do.

There are vaccines in the pipe line, I believe some have already been produced and a number of people inoculated. However if you don't want to go down this path I would suggest among other precautions you should try to make sure you're washing and drying your hands properly and regularly.

As bacteria can be increased by up to 254% when using traditional warm air dryers after washing your hands this can have a huge impact on what viruses and illnesses you contract and pass on to others.

    Swine Flu... Whine Flu!

    What a load of tosh!

Swine flu is nothing but media hype to cover the expenses scandal's.

I haven't had swine flu, nor have any of my colleagues or their relations/friends.

Swine flu isnt any more harmful than normal flu... people die from seasonal flu...

Smells like BS if you ask me....

No, it isn't a smokescreen - although I am sure the Government has seen the opportunity to show how much on the ball they are.

But calling it all a smokescreen or, *ahem*, BS doesn't explain why its widely reported worldwide. That doesn't explain why in France they've been talking about stopping people travelling too and from the United Kingdom.

Swine Flu is a concern because a worldwide pandemic of flu has been expected for over a decade. I was doing some work with the World Health Organisation back in 1997 and they were talking about the next worldwide flu pandemic then.

What makes it so much of a worry is that nobody has a natural immunity to it, which means it has the potential to spread very rapidly and for a lot of people to get it. It doesn't mean we're all going to die - far from it - it does mean that a lot of people may have very mild symptoms and a couple of days of feeling off-colour.

So yes, I'd agree that there is a lot of media hype and I'm sure the Government has been bigging it up to show how much they are in control.

To be fair though, there is a health emergency that has to be dealt with. For the NHS, as for hospitals and health authorities around the world, this means there will be a lot more people occupying hospital beds, or needing medication at their homes, whilst at the same time they will have doctors, nurses and auxillary staff off sick themselves. The good news is the WHO, as well as the NHS, have been planning for this for a very long time indeed and the spread of swine flu has so far matched all their predictions. They know what is likely to happen next and they know what they'll do about it.

So what have I done personally about swine flu? I've made sure we have tinned food in the house so that if we were all poorly for a week, we'd have enough food to eat. I've made sure we have enough medication in the house to handle high temperatures and the usual flu symptoms. I've made sure we've got plenty of boxes of tissues around. All stuff that if we don't use, it doesn't really matter, and it hasn't costed a fortune to do anyway. It seems an appropriate response.
