I have a field with Christmas trees in all year round - but they dont have lights on

I am always in two minds when I see Christmas ramping up early. One says oh my god why start celebrating this early it kind of ruins it. The other is - god it makes our drab streets look nice in these cold and dark evenings.

A lot of trees go up this time of year where I currently live (just outside Munich) as they celebrate 'advent'. The wife started putting up decorations in the house yesterday...

I think its 12 Days Before Christmas And Bring them Down 12 Days After Christmas as per tradition, In the states they tend to put theirs up shortly after thanksgiving.

But in this country we seem to put them up earlier and earlier each year, Soon it will be an all year thing

It must be the weekend for Xmas decorations up by me. Yesterday I saw a couple of houses that had gone the whole hog, xmas lights outside, brightly lit reindeers, and inflatable Santas etc.

Can't believe it's nearly Xmas, where's the year gone!!??

Start of Advent (Sun 29 Nov 09 this year) seems an appropriate time, but officially it is a few days before Christmas, in preparation for the day itself, and then (as many have already indicated), they remain up for the 12 days of Christmas (ending at the feast of the 3 Kings).

However, Christmas decorations are a difficult call. Shops who provide us with the goods we want to buy, need to prepare many months beforehand for our buying frenzy; and they need to remind us to buy stuff in good time.

Actually I have the impression that most shops have been more sensible this year. Likewise in the media, the jingles on Smooth Radio seem to have only really started last weekend (Sat 28 Nov 09).

The build up to Christmas I find is all quite off-putting really. It tends to be over done, by people who have no real interest for what it is about, but just what they can get out of it.
