After seeing that another member on the forums was planting a tree for each project they did I thought this was an excellent idea and thought it would be good if I did the same.
However I have just read this article and it suggests that maybe it isn't doing as much good as we thought
i must admit i only skimmed through, i thought it was saying that trees are just absorbing less as the planet warms. if thats was the case i would thought the answer was to plant loads of trees in order to slow, then reverse the warming. I admit thats a very simplistic view....even by my standards
One of the main reasons the plant a tree thing doesn't work in the short term is that we keep chopping down huge trees, which then release their CO2 and plant iddy biddy little ones. To be effective you need to plant a forest and they will not soak up enough CO2 to make up for the large forests being destroyed for decades.
The report suggests we have 8 years left to turn this around but can you see any political moves to stop deforestation in the next 8 years?
That is not to say we shouldn't do it though, if everyone got involved then in decades to come we may be able to repair some of the damage we have done but we will not see results in our lifetime.
We all need to do something about our carbon footprint NOW. That means changing our lifestyle and being much more selective about where we spend our money, in order to support green projects.
