Twitter is useful for broadcasting news updates on a daily basis (if not more frequently) to interested parties.

In essence, you sign up for a profile and then you gather followers. When you post updates (no more than 140 characters) all your followers get them. It's good for showing off your knowledge of your industry and keeping your name in your customer's/industry's eyes.

The most effective users of Twitter "Tweet" many times a day, but hardly spend any time on the site itself. You can do this by setting up your favourite RSS feeds in FriendFeed, so that all those items go out over Twitter (great for industry news or your blog - we use it to broadcast Biz Needs on our site). You should also add a ShareThis button to your browser so if you find or comment on an interesting article, you can also share this with your Twitter followers.

You can also get your latest Tweet to become your status update on LinkedIn, Ecademy, Plaxo, Facebook, MySpace and more, generating you further clicks still.

Most important perhaps is to let people know you are on it. Tell your customers and prospects in your next marketing campaign and make sure to include a link to your Twitter profile in your e-mail signature.

I now have over 80 opted in followers and it generates quite a bit of traffic to our site. A welcome amount for the minimal effort it needs once you've got it all set up.

I am running a training session on this on 2 December in Cambridge if you are interested.

should have added - your facebook status updates look odd - because only your half of any conversation you have is shown..

I've been trying to post regularly over the last couple of weeks and it's good fun. Finding it quite useful.
