100 YEARS LATER AND

1977 - The space shuttle Enterprise passed its first solo flight test.

1248 - The rebuilding of the Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany, began after being destroyed by fire.

1880 - The Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany was completed after 632 years of rebuilding.

Having lived in Germany for 9 years and visiting this quite outstanding piece of architecture...I never realised the above fact

2000 - A Russian submarine Kursk sank to the bottom of the Barrent Sea. There were 118 sailors on the nuclear-powered vessel. All of the crew were pronounced dead on August 22.

Remember the above like it was yesterday....what a horrible way to go...i remember distinctly the Russians denying the incident for days and refusing any offer of help

I remember that event too - they could hear the crew banging to say they were still alive - UK boats were nearby the the Russians refused their help. Willing to lose the entire crew than admit they had weapons they shouldn't have on board....

Such a sad story!

1. 1057 - Macbeth, the King of Scotland, was killed by the son of King Duncan

2. 1945 - The Allies proclaimed V-J Day a day after Japan agreed to surrender unconditionally.

3. 1947 - India became independent from Britain and was divided into the countries of India and Pakistan. India had been under British about 200 years.

4. 1994 - Ilich Ramirez Sanchez was jailed in France. He was the international terrorist known as "Carlos the Jackal."
