I am looking for a simple, cheap, idiot proof gps - anyone has any recommendations?

TomTom all the way If my sister can use it....

GPS - Garmin eTrex - locks on to up to 7 satellites and I use it when hiking - works under most forest canopies as well. It has helped me navigate back to my car from some great places in it's time (all around the world)

For a car...Tom Tom. For walking, there are some specialised, smaller handsets that weigh less.

Avoid car manufacturer ones - very expensive, mostly not as good as Tom Tom

Garmin fan here, though have had TomTom experience too which ain't bad.

Both will have you driving onto a farm track and then into a field one day, so best to keep your eyes on the road.

Also good idea to keep a hard copy Atlas in the car as these things can let you down on occasions.

I've used TomTom, Garmin and NavMan - I'd recommend TomTom without hesitation. Difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes it better but I found it so much easier to drive to new places with the TomTom
